We were awarded contracts to provide Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) and Mass Decontamination (MD) units for use by the civil authorities. In the event of major event e.g. terrorist bomb at an underground railway network, or chemical / radioactive attack, a number of USAR or MD units, as required, can be deployed quickly from pre-determined storage facilities, using a minimum number of prime mover vehicles. All the units were based on a design of demountable sub-frame, conforming to Container Handling Equipment Manufactures (CHEM) standard. This incorporated a hook bar for dragging the frame onto the back of the prime mover, with roller wheels on the base to assist this. Locking pockets were fitted to the base of the unit to enable it to be locked onto the prime mover for transport. The USAR units were provided with doors on three sides to provide access to slide-out racks used to store various instruments, power tools, jacks, cutting gear etc. The MD units were provided with end doors only to give access to cages containing decontamination suits and supplies. All access doors were fitted with standard seals and locking mechanisms that are easy to maintain.
